How we re-bed and re-point a ridge line
Remove existing cappings
All existing ridge and hip cappings are carefully removed.
Clean down the bed course
The base course is cleaned back, ready for a fresh mortar bed.
New mortar bed
A new sand-cement mortar bed is applied along the ridge and hips.
Re-set cappings
Cappings are re-set and properly aligned along the ridge line.
Flexible pointing
A quality flexible pointing compound is applied, colour-matched to the tile.
Frequently asked questions
Signs include visible cracking or separation of the pointing along the ridge, mortar fragments in the gutters after rain, or tiles that shift when walked on. We can conduct a roof inspection and provide a written report.
For common profiles — CSR Monier, Boral, Bristile and similar — we can usually source a matching or very close replacement. Older or discontinued profiles may require discussion at inspection.
If repairs are localised to a few broken tiles and the ridges are sound, repair is cost-effective. If the bedding has failed across all ridges, valley iron is perforating and more than 20% of tiles are cracked, a full replacement may be more economical over a ten-year horizon.
For a typical three-to-four bedroom home, a full ridge and hip re-bed and re-point takes one to three days depending on roof complexity.
