Retail fitout: the basics

From shell tenancy to a trading store

A retail fitout converts a shell or make-good tenancy into a trading store. It encompasses shop front and signage structures, internal layout and circulation, display fixtures and joinery, point-of-sale counters, back-of-house storage, lighting design, flooring, ceiling treatments, and all building services.

In a shopping centre context, the fitout must also comply with centre management’s Design and Construction Guidelines — a layer of documentation and approval that requires experienced builders who understand the process.

Retail sectors we serve

Built across every retail category

Fashion & apparel

Fitting rooms with appropriate lighting and privacy, display systems for garments and accessories, feature joinery, and a shopfront that draws foot traffic.

Technology & electronics

Slatwall and display systems designed around product security, demonstration stations with concealed power and data, and counter areas with integrated POS infrastructure.

Grocery & fresh food

Integration with refrigeration systems, tile or safety vinyl flooring, commercial kitchen areas, and compliance with FSANZ food safety standards.

Specialty & service retail

Pet stores, homewares, toy retailers, jewellers, florists, dry cleaners and service-retail concepts — each with unique display, storage and compliance requirements.

QSR & food courts

Grease trap coordination, commercial exhaust canopy integration, tile or commercial vinyl flooring and centre-guideline compliance. (See Hospitality Fitouts.)

Back-of-house & dispatch

Storage, staff amenities and dispatch areas — the operational engine room behind a well-merchandised shopfront.

Compliance

A second layer beyond the NCC

Shopping centre fitouts come with the landlord’s Design and Construction Guidelines, governing shopfront treatment, materials, services integration, waste management and hours of work. We manage Landlord Approval documentation, coordinate with the centre construction manager, and meet the handover requirements of the specific centre.

  • Shop front framing, glazing & signage backing structures
  • Custom joinery — counters, display cabinets, shelving, fitting rooms
  • Feature walls & brand graphic backing panels
  • Commercial flooring — vinyl, epoxy, polished concrete, tile
  • Track & LED feature lighting, emergency & exit
  • Security & CCTV conduit provision
